I am interested in learning what the old '80s/'90s PRS basses sound like, and what their necks feel like; dimensions would help here for those who have them available to measure, thanks!

PRS basses

From reading that other thread I think I'll pass on PRS basses, there's a whole lot of better basses out there, it seems.
That was my experience, but some people love them. I had tried a couple and while the one I bought sounded good in the store I ended up not really digging it in any of the music I was doing.
Worth a look if you run into one but don't make it an impulse buy. IMHO...
There's a great PRS demo on YouTube. The guy who made it ended up attaching it to a for sale post here in the classifieds. His crack addict in a typewriter factory style of playing doesn't really showcase the tone, but the video really dispels the myth that the two pickup models sound like butt.
You mean the mikebass video? If so, I wouldn't exactly call that a great demo video, he is not really playing bass, he seems to be using the bass mostly as a percussion instrument, from what I see.
So, he's selling his, eh? I'd prefer an early, set neck one from the mid '80s, anyway, if I were to seriously look for one.

I have to agree with a lot of people On this, there's a lot to like about their guitars, but they just didn't get basses right. I have played about 5 looking for a good one and their just kind of blaah. Well made and prs quality, the necks have a nice kind of jazz ish profile. They sound kind of jazz bass ish but without the growl, and don't have punch like a p bass either. On the thin side sound wise, they just arent alive sounding like most other basses. One of those basses you want to really really want to like but just dosent have much to like. Super letdown from their guitars.

The preamps are not versatile like most designs, but a few of the PUP combinations work well.
Even Paul Reed Smith himself said those basses are only good for reggae. Full OF deep is a good description.
I've. Only ever found 4's with the three single coil design. None sounded very good IMO. Deep wouldn't be a word I would use for them . I wanted to like them, they just didn't get it right IMO.
At least we now have the answer the next time a "What's the best bass for reggae" question comes up.
