Here's a left-field one: Beefeater (Washington, DC), who played a pretty weird mix of funk (including slap bass!), punk, and metal. Some of the guitar playing reminds me of Bad Brains.

Oh, and the Big Boys (Texas) who were a more straightforward punk-funk band.

And hell, New Model Army (UK) were a pretty intense post-punk band very much built on a distinctive bass tone and style. Which is weird because I guess they went through a few bass players, but somehow they all sounded exactly alike. Band-bass-rig-syndrome, I guess.

Some More:

The Misfits - "She" has the best punk bassline for a beginner bassist to learn it's easy and it'll get you in the punk spirt.

NOFX - Fat Mike (Who owns Fat Wreck Chords which has a policy of making CD's cheap under $10) is a good bassist not great but, he can put your Sum, Fallout, and Blink boys to shame.

Stiff Little Fingers - Not really my style but, the basslines are catchy.

Operation Ivy - Alot of people consider them and Rancid the same band because the leadsinger and bassist of Rancid both were in it. I prefer them to Rancid personally.

Social Distortion - "Mommy's Little Monster" nuff said.

Bad Religion - Political punk at it's best the lead singer has a PHD.

Anti - Flag - They are to our generation what Bad Religion was to the 80's generation as far as good honest to goodness political punk. A cool thing they do is write songs about certain essays like they did on "Uranium is a War Crime" and then they'll tell you how to read up on certain things about the songs.

Leftover Crack - If Bad Brains, NOFX, and Bad Religion had kids this would be them. These guys can't decide if their a punk band, a reggage band, or a metal band. Highly enjoyable.

Sleezus Fist and the Latter Day Saints - Local Texas band on myspace or Facebook they have a site too that may or not still be up and running and still may or not have their debut album avaliable for free download. They blend gory black humor lyrics, with a metalesque Punk assault.

Minor Threat - Required listening for any self respecting punk along with the Clash, Rancid, and Bad Religion.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - They are really horn heavy punk (Ska punk) but, if they don't make you move your feet you should probaly check your pulse.

Less Than Jake - They used to be really punk now they sorta turned more radio friendly since Anthem but, then again that's when they started getting noticed alot. Still I love them.

Alkaline Trio - They are really, really, cool and if you want cool basslines and dark themed, tongue in cheek lyrics buy "Goddamnit" or "Maybe I'll Catch Fire" as these IMO are their best albums ever. Dan the bassist has some of modern punks best basslines and a majority of them are done while he's trading vocal duities with guitarist Matt Skibba.

Midtown - Not alot of people will agree with me on this but, any punk collection is incomplete without "Forget What You Know" this is what the lead singer of Cobra Starship was doing prior to making crappy dance music.

Another band I'd suggest listening too that has heavy punk influenses but, are far from punk is:

Boys Night Out - They are UNbelieveable.

T.S.O.L. are one of my favorite punk bands of all time. Great music with anarchist themed lyrics, how can you go wrong. I wouldn't call the bass playing anything special, but then again it's punk, right? Also their singer Jack Grisham was a maniac- setting fires, digging up corpses, beating the crap out of people, he lived a crazy life until he got clean. He just wrote an amazing book BTW it's called An American Demon. It's on Amazon.com

If you want to pick up a "greatest hits" of sorts get Who's Screwin' Who? It's re-recordings of some of their best tunes. For the original albums, T.S.O.L./Weathered Statues is good. Their "Live '91" is also totally awesome.

YOu know its funny most Punk Bassists arent know for being very good but, But ive been one for 30 years! Paul Siminon (clash) IS the coolest bassest ive ever seen, Check out the Bass lines of Dave Tregunna LOrds Of the New Church

wow took that many posts to have the RAMONES listed, try playing the RAMONES at their concert speed. i love the SEX PISTOLS too, not so challanging on bass but great songs also GBH and CRASS are a couple of my favs. cant forget IGGY AND THE STOOGES and THE NEW YORK DOLLS.
