I was perusing Marketplace one day recently, as I tend to do, when I noticed a used Ampeg Heritage 8x10 cab nearby for half of what a new one goes for. I verified with the seller before meeting up that it still had its original Heritage branded speakers (it did), and I was off to buy it.
I knew these were amazing sounding cabs. For a couple of years I was both playing and helping out with backline for a music festival, and one of the local music stores who were co-sponsoring the fest always loaned out a Heritage 8x10 from their inventory. Every time I played through that cab or watched someone else use it, it always sounded noticeably better than the more common 8x10 Classics you usually see. So, to find a used but basically mint condition one for half price was a no-brainer.
Anyway...I love it. It has more clarity than the 810E I've been touring with, and it handles the full power of my early 70's SVT with OD's and fuzzes which my '79 8x10, as awesome as it sounds, sometimes couldn't quite do. With a Big Muff-style fuzz in particular, the speakers in the '79 would kind of mush out too much, while the Heritage drivers maintain the vintage tone but also stay nice and tight. I did just order the blue and silver replacement grill so that it'll match my SVT head. Can't wait to hit the road with it in May!
