Dig this yall,
After playing a colleagues bass with various tapped coil options, I decided to tap into the single coil sounds and potential of my bass.
I am not an engineer, nor even an audio dude. I play bass and I have rewired a number of basses in my day. Every time I decide to do electronics work, I have to relearn a lot. So Ill put this down for all to read and see. Feel free to comment or correct me if I am wrong.
I learned a lot, and because I didnt see a very complete or concise explanation of the push pull pot itself, I decided I would post this here- teach a man to fish so to speak...
I have 2 aero humbuckers in my Stambaugh 6 string bass. Its configured with 2 volume pots -> mute switch->passive/active switch->preamp/passive out.
What I did:
I put push-pull pots in the bass for 2 volume+coil splitting- Parallel/Single coil. Each pickup there for has the option. This gives me the most options. In bass terms, I now have these configurations available.=> 2 humbuckers; PJ; J; Music Man & single (I know that the humbuckers on my bass are parallel, not series all you nerds, so its different than a real P bass. Neither do I have split coils for that matter, but these are aero pickups, and might as well be series cause theyre so Phat they sound like series!).
What I wish I learned from a concise website:
Push-Pull Pots are DPDT switches and pots combined, but the only thing they share is the chassis. The shaft of the pot is used to throw the switch, but other than that there is no internal connection that will change the way you treat either the switch or the potentiometer. To some that me seem apparent, but it took me a while to accept.
