Picked up my first set of flat wounds the other day for my P-bass. I’ve had traditional rounds, tape wounds, GHS pressure wounds and finally decided it’s time. Always wanted flats. The clerks at my local shop handed me a pack of Pyramid 640/A heavy’s. I’m just wondering are these meant for short scale basses? The cloth threading around the ends of the strings just sits right next to the nut and just about into it a little on the E. Minus that concern they feel, play and sound amazing.

No they're not. They are shorter than most (36.42" from ball to end of full gauge, says their catalog at page 14), and meant for long-scale top-loading only. Just shave back the E string silk until the metal is exposed in the section of string in contact with the nut (which, I suppose, is still at full diameter, not yet tapered, at that point).

If the package says "No. 640", then they're Pyramid's version of short scale strings. Like TI and Hofner, their short scale strings are made for short scale basses like a Hofner; a floating bridge, several inches forward of the tailpiece. Other string makers call strings of that length "Medium scale". the Long scale Pyramids are the "No, 640-1" set. What you have sounds like the short scale - but really medium-scale - set... If you're happy with them? Then just play them; otherwise? Get a set of the 640-1s, and save the ones you have for your Hofner Beatle Bass - or a medium scale bass with a "normal" bridge...
