q's about pots and caps (sx related)

hi all

as per my previous thread
i killed the stock P pickup on my p/j

i have to order one and the place
i get it has caps and pots, which are hard to get in ireland

my sx pots seem very good, compared to others experience
(no scratching at all and very solid)

the only thing is that there is that
they only react about to about a quarter of the turn
(when you dime it and roll back, they make a big difference
utila about a quarter turn and then barely go down
for the rest of the turn, if that makes any sense

is this just cheap pots?

any essential caps i could try in the bass
seeing as i am mail-ordering and they are cheap

My SX was gutted and all new pots installed along with a switchcraft jack. Stateside, Stewart MacDonald sells bass wiring kits that have all you need for rewiring a p or j model. I have bought three of these for various basses. Looking at what comes in the Stew-Mac kits may be a starting point ...

no wiring kit for pj on stewmac at the mo,
anyway, im not afraid of a soldering iron
(well not after cutting my teeth on a jimmy page wired les paul)

i'd actually love to ask a bunch of sx mod questions
but im afraid! (but going through the sx pages is an epic task)

any thoughts on cap values or 250k pot replacement
or even fancy push pull schemes!

i do believe that your pots are log pot...you got to buy a linear pots to have the even increase/decrease of value(vol or tone)

This is pretty common. I have it on my Lakland JO4 as well. You can try linear pots instead of log(aritmic). It might improve the control you have. Be sure to get the same value though.
The cap is just there for the tone.
