Do these amps, QSC K8 / Mackie DLM8, reproduce the low E on an upright bass?? Please excuse me for not quite understanding the frequency response thing.

The low E on an upright bass has a much stronger 2nd harmonic than the first (fundamental). So if the cab can reproduce 80 Hz well, it will be OK.
If you are used to bridge mounted pickups that emphasize the fundamental more than in the acoustic output of the bass, you might become disappointed with the results and a high pass filter to get rid of the low frequencies will help not to overload amp or cab.
It depends very much on the cab how well the low frequencies are transmitted.
So I hope others jump in who know the active boxes personally.
I'm a bit more happy with a 10", but as I said, that largely depends on the cab design. And don't forget that there are cabs with even smaller drivers that work well with DB.

The Power And EQ sections of the QSC K10 and OSC K8 are virtually identical. The K10 has a lower frequency response, 60 Hz vs 66 Hz on the K8. The K8 has a smaller footprint and weighs 5 lbs less.

I bought the Mackie and was totally disappointed with the low end response. I sold it to a friend who is a singer/guitarist. It's perfect for his solo act. I now have an MAS 26 and am VERY happy with it. (and its 'woofers' are 2 sixes - but rich, tight bass to die for. And btw, that low end is not coming from a pickup but from an Ischell contact mic - very natural and acoustic sounding).

I rented one and that was my thought too. I was going to try it on a gig but it never made it out of the rehearsal room.
I spent an afternoon demoing the QSC K10 and K8 boxes. I wasn't impressed at all with the bass response of the K8. The K10 was better but for what the thing costs and weighs it didn't do much for me. I've used several PA cabs over the years and the criticisms I have is they're designed to throw past where you'll typically stand on stage and unless you get up into the 12"/15" speakers they don't always do adequate justice to the bottom end.
The Markbass Mini CMD 121P combo is lighter, more than powerful enough and has an EQ section that works well for the bass. I've added a pole mount and for me it's better than any powered PA cab out there that I know of....and I've owned or tried on gigs many of the Mackies and JBLs. By the time I demoed the QSC stuff I knew what I was looking for and the K10/K8 didn't cut it. The K12 might have but the weight and cost kept me from bothering to plug it in.

how did you add a pole mount? V. interesting. That's probably the main thing stopping me from going back to a bass combo - the ability to have my K10 at ear height is gold.

Sticking out like it does I thought it might be annoying when not using it on the pole. But it actually tilts the amp back very nicely which is something I generally do with any cabinet on the floor.

No experience with those two models, but I have used a bridge wing pickup into an FDeck HPF into a Yamaha MSR100. With the ultra lows filtered out and the highs rolled off, I thought it worked fine for pit orchestra levels- relatively balanced and adequate lows. I can't say if it would be satisfactory for louder gigs.
