The "New Real Book" volume 1 is the one, most people seem to have. I haven't seen The ones marked NEW, in the UK yet....

Can anyone think of any songs that go between 1/4 note triplets and 1/4 notes frequently?

I don't know about pop tunes going between the two feels 'frequently' - it tends to create a dragging feeling when played against a straight beat or extreme 'gear change' feeling if the whole band does it - it depends who's doing it and when. Here's a couple of examples of basslines/songs that use 1/4 triplets.


The Police - Message in a Bottle: In the Chorus after Sting sings the words "Message in a Bottle" - in that signature phrase that he plays. The last 4 notes of that phrase is a bar with a 1/4 note triplet landing on a half note. So it's: trip- a -let - 3 rest.

Here's the rhythm for the whole two bar phrase:

|1 2 3 rest| Trip-a-let 3 rest|

Here's an easy one...

The Beatles - I Wanna Hold Your Hand: The last bar of the tune.

"I wanna hold your..trip- a - let, trip- a - let -end.
