Question About Acoustics

I was listening to a 4 piece band last Saturday (2 guitars, bass, & drums). They were playing outdoors under a permanent canopy where I sat to listen. I could barely heat the bass player. However, as soon as I got out from under the "roof", the bass came through loud & clear. The mix was now perfect. The sound man was at the other end of the pavillion from the band. If it makes a difference, the bass player was using a Musicman bass and an Acoustic B200H and matching 15" cabinet, which, BTW, sounded great.

Can anyone explain what might have been happening here?

serious phase issues under canopy, possibly due to the canopy and possible surrounding walls. situation contrary to this (bass booming under structures) is actually very common...

There were no walls, just the "roof". All I can say is that once I got out from under it, the bass found its proper place in the mix.

it could be due to light roof structure, that reflects mid and high frequencies, while letting bass frequencies escape through... A problem in many "tent-like" outdoor venues...
