question about studios

i was wondering how exactly large studios use those giant consoles to mix down their tracks that were recorded. i mean like before all these firewire and usb control surfaces.

did they just use a recorder with multiple outputs and put those into a mixer or what?

i wish i did. i wanna get that studio feeling without one of those newfangled firewire interfaces.

would putting a Y-cable in each of the inserts and sending one end to an input and one to an output of an 8in/8out sound card allow me to monitor my mix and control levels with the faders?...and then when i'm done mixing, i could press play and record it on a hard disk recorder or tape?

If I could afford it, I'd love to have an older MCI console with a 24 track machine and a mastering deck. My laptop and mbox will have to do the trick until then

Not quite, insert basicaly gets signal out of your mixer and back in before the fader. You wouldn't be able to adjust levels before they go into your interface. What mixer are we talking about?

a behringer xynx 2222.

for level setting couldn't i just use trim knob and solo each track on pre fader listening and look at the meter until i get it to 0db, then use the faders to control the mix on the monitors and eventually the mixdown?

Yep, that should work fine.
