Double Bass Question for NYers

Most of the places in NYC that have music (of the jazz/improvised type, anyway) aren't too uptight about the underage thing, unless you try to order an alcoholic beverage. I know 55bar lets under-21's in all the time. You shouldn't have too much trouble while you're here. And go check out Marco, for sure....

The problem word in all of this is not underage, it's the word free. Even if they don't have a cover charge, they ain't gonna let you sit there for very long without buying something, if not a minimum amount of something.

OK, no argument there. However, places like 55 have a minimal cover charge (or none at all for the early set), so having to drop even $5 for a soda or something is much easier on the wallet than a $25-$35 "music charge" plus a $15 minimum, IMHO. This, of course, makes me want to start ranting about all the places that could afford to pay the musicians a decent rate, but still insist that you play for the door, or beg for tips like you were playing on the street. I will resist that impulse, though.

I've never been to New York before and neither have my mom and my brother who I'm going with so we were planning to stay around where we're staying. I'm not sure what time I'm getting in Friday but I'll definitely try to get to that gig.

Edit: I was checking out the site for Louis 649 and it says you're playing not this Friday but the next, sorry if I wasn't clear I'm actually coming this weekend.

Sorry mate, no. You and mom and bro, grab a taxi, ride the subway and see some of New York. You've got friends there, don't miss a good opportunity. It's a great city, especially for people who are or aspire to be musicians.
