Question on string placement

Ok, This maybe a dumb question, however I was wondering should the this be metal to metal no red touching or not, again sorry if this is a dumb question.

Not sure what the overall specs of your bass are, but the bridge looks way closer too the pickup than a normal jazz bass. Was the bridge mounted too far forward? That would explain why your saddles are set so far back, and why the red cloth on the strings is over the saddles. If it's actually intonated there, there isn't much you can do except getting some strings that are all metal with no wrapping.

If it's not intonated correctly the way it sits now, you may be able to move the saddles forward so the metal part of the strings will rest on the saddles.

It's probably not a huge deal just playing it like it is, but your strings will definitely be more responsive if they weren't resting on the cloth wrap.

You can unwrap them. It's best to get metal to metal contact and the bridge side wraps are cosmetic anyway - most strings don't have them.

It's a washburn P/J bass, I can move the saddles so it's metal to metal contact.

Moving the saddles arbitrarily, will throw off your intonation. My advice is use some kind of spacer/s or get something like a BA ll bridge which extends a bit further back.http://www.bestbassgear.com/badass-bridge.htm

It's cool, moved them forward an lowered the strings down a bit, double checked all and it didn't mess with the intonation, retuned and all is good.
