Double Bass Quick preamp question

Hey all, Quick question on advice for a preamp:

Currently running my Shen Willow > Realist Lifeline > Radial Pz Pre > Carvin amp. Am looking into another amp idea later, but am trying to come up with a preamp solution. I am VERY happy with the current rig, however, am looking for a small preamp I can leave in my upright bag for use when I don't have the full pedal/amp combo.

So, looking for a small preamp that would help me out. Thoughts include Fdeck's preamp, Fishman, Schatler and LR Baggs since those are all small.

Anyone have a recommendation over another?

(amp discussion will be after Christmas, gotta take care of the nieces' gifts first, ha!)

I'm very happy with the Headway EDB-2. Not sure how it compares in size to the others, but it is about the same as a Baggs Paracoustic that I also own. Bigger than an Fdeck, but it has more features. I keep it in the front pocket of the case for my AI Coda.

Those are all good choices, but because size was mentioned I'll throw another into the mix:

Bill Durtler at (Link Removed) makes some pretty feature filled, bass specific, preamps.

I have the older prototype version M0070, in a lightweight wood case that fits behind the tailpiece.

He's in Calgary, if I'm correct, so the exchange is in your favour as well.

+1 For it's feature set, and Form/Factor it's certainly the "best in it's class"IME. I have a Grace Designs Felix now but it costs over 2x what the Headway ED-2 does.

Yes, for a quick DI hookup to FOH, or if there is a monitor on stage. I almost always travel with all the gear remotely possibly needed for a gig, but in the rare cases I didn't bring the Radial and Amp, I'd like to have something small in my bag just in case!

fdeck does not have a DI out unfortunately.....once again - " i wish francis would make a full pre-amp with DI"

i'd recommend the fdeck + countryman DI for this setup. I use an fdeck + orchid mute DI which is equivalent when i don't use my amp.

caveat - i don't personally care for radial products. i had the pre-Z and tone bone and thought they added too much color to my sound. fdeck is way more natural - tames the piezo without making it sound electrified.

no knowledge of the headway but i hear lots of good things here.

Neddy: did you find the pre-z added color even when using the pre-out to the FOH? I use it primarily for musical theater pits when doubling, sending pre-signals to FOH, and adjusting tone to cab for us to hear in the pit.

Maybe I should listen to the signal somehow out of the pre-out.... hmm

+11 My Headway EDB-2 is my 'Swiss Army Knife'. Provies Phantom Power (18 v?) when you need it, excellent feedback control, 5 band EQ, works well for doubling or to put in front of a powered speaker or power amp.
They also have a smaller unit if you don't need all the features of the EDB-2.
