Quintessential Blues Bassists

Nobody mentioned RW Grigsby? I went to see a GREAT bluesperformance last night. The band was Mark Hummel (singer/harper), Little Charlie Baty (guitar), RW Grigsby (bass) and Marty Dodson (drums).
All I can say is that RW Grigsby is now one of my heros :bassist:

I going to second that. I saw RW Grigsby play at BB King's in New York City this past Tuesday night with the Mark Hummel led "The Golden State - Lone Star Revue". RW played a '78 P-Bass with flats that were as old as the bass (he told me so!) and a '70's Univox hollowbody.

If you want to hear the difference between a great electric bass player and someone who is a great upright player AND a great electric bass player, listen to this guy. He didn't play upright at this gig, but the basslines were a treat to listen to. The influence of jazz style upright was very evident, and fit in the blues realm perfectly.

I've always appreciated the blues and just starting to delve into it deeply. Increasingly leaving the rock / pop behind and recently co-founded a blues / swing band. I bought two Mark Hummel CD's at Tuesday's shows and RW's parts are going to be my "lesson plan" for the next little while!

I have had a couple of mark's CD's for years, terrific stuff. Doesn't surprise me he has talented people with him. Which 2 cd's did you get?
