Yes it gets 'ugly' when you delve into any British person's genealogy, because the UK was invaded so many times in history. My father's family is descended from the Danelaw, a section of England, which had a high Danish population and adhered to different laws, thanks to Viking raiders. In this case, "British pride" becomes "Danish pride" if you try and claim you are 'indigenous' to Britain. I saw somebody talk about the "aboriginal population" of the UK the other day... the mind boggles.
Kind of like when someone thinks red hair is a purely Irish trait. It came from Scandenavia, with the invaders. Also, Danelaw was more about the time, although there were definite lines of demarcation. I learned more about this after I looked into my mom's genealogy after my dad passed and found ancestors' birth dates in the early 1500s, with reference to someone in the family who fought with King Edmund Ironsides, against King Canute in the Battle of Sherston, 1016 A.D., and died later that day.
Where is your father's family from? My earliest ancestors to come to America arrived in 1654, from Wiltshire, Lancashire.
There's almost no possibility that someone's lineage is pure, from the standpoint of being ONLY descended from people of one area. It's just not plausible. That's one of the reasons I think it's so ridiculous that anyone would think they're so much better than someone else, except by actions, thought and in what they say. Non-thinking people don't care that they're ignorant of these details and they tend to discount any possibility of this truth. Populations mix by choice, or by force and this has been true for all of mankind's history.
