Radiused covers for Angus

A small project I did for TB'er Angus.

Radiused top Bart 6 string pick-ups in solid Holly covers with a matched radius inside and out to the pick-ups.

Was a difficult job, but they came out really nice.

Sweet!!! Looks like old ivory, but is it the acrylized holly blocks I did for Angus?

I'll share a pic of the jig when I set it back up. I will be doing another set of these in the near future.

Larry, I liked it, it was easy to work, unlike some of the problems that can occur with holly, like pieces inadvertantly going flying or the checks that can happen. It produces a really fine grade of dust and shavings much like phenolic does, but with out the amount of tool grab. Very nice product.

These look great I was often wondering how to do an inside radius short of carving it or scraping it out.

That's cuz he did a DAMN good job! I dunno why, but NOW I'm craving a set of wood-covered pickups.

I can see that, but I was under the impression that bart covers were epoxied on and not removable. That's why I ask, and if they were removed, how and with what?

In the past people have machined off the top or all of the black plastic shell, leaving the epoxy-encased coil/magnet structure only, to go into a wooden shell.

Actually, only the tops were removed down about 1/16" just so the shielding was starting to show through the epoxy, then the sides are roughed up with 100 grit paper, and re-epoxied into the wood shells.

The tops are about 1/16 thick keeping the original covering thickness over the pick-ups, so he will not have to move the pick-ups any closer than they were originally.

I have removed the complete shell from pick-ups before, but try to avoid this unless it's absolutely necessary for space constriction.
