Rainy Day Build

The weather has been gorgeous, so I've been working outside.
But it's raining today, so I did get some stuff done.

Before I get too much further with anything on the instrument, I want to get my sample over to the painter.
I needed to sand down the satin a few times. Last night I managed to oil sand the first coat of oil. I'll probably do about 10 coats of hand rubbed oil from here on out before I get it to the painter.

Last little ditty for the day

Put my neck on my radius jig, and cut the radius. Took all of ten minutes
I'll need to go back with the sanding blocks, maybe an hour at the very most, but it sure beats doing this by hand

I'm almost ready to turn over the test piece to my painter. The piece shown has 7 coats of amber tinted oil. This is a great base for a 3 tone tobacco burst

The body just got sanded to 320. I need to even it out a bit. Will put one more coat of shellac, and then start the oil processes. By the time I get the test piece back, I should have the body oiled and ready to go

So you are going to stain it like that, then send it to the painter for just the burst part?

Update,

I have started the oil sanding. I wanted to do this at 400, but it didn't quite take enough of the stain off, so I'm at 320. Thought I'd take a pic of the progress
This pic shows why I am going to do a burst on this. After all, paint is meant to hide things.
In this case, it's the end grain. It's fairly decent on the treble and bass sides where the grain gets somewhat defined. The head and the butt end are horrid, with the worst of it being in the lower cutout.
I'm about to sand the cut out. Wish me luck

Is that really the grain though? It looks like burnt wood to me. (I'm no expert though.)

That's the grain of the wood with an aniline dye/shellac mixture as a filler for the pores in the wood

Managed to get this all oil sanded out today. I like it.
I know my painter will be telling me not to go opaque brown all the way around. I'll have to agree. (First pic below)
The end grains need to be covered up though. I just don't like the blotchy nature of how they look, even though the butt end doesn't look that bad.

I dont know man, looks pretty gorgeous to me. Sometimes a fresh pair of eyes (especially when they belong to a pro painter) is what you need after slaving over a project.

Looks great as is. If it were me, I'd shoot some gloss clear over that, then polish. Done and done!

In actuality, it does look pretty nice as is.

I'm looking to do something just a little different than what I've done in the past with finishes.

It's time for a sunburst, and I think this will be it.

I'm not going to question your choice because I've seen enough of your work to to trust your eye and your vision, but I do feel compelled to say it's gorgeous as is, so I can only imagine what you're seeing in your minds eye is also killer...

It looks really good as-is but end grain always gets weird. I think a subtle burst at the edges will look look fantastic.

Would look gorgeous either way, frankly. If you go the burst route, I'd keep it subtle; it's not like you're covering up the fact that it's plywood.

My plan before yesterday was to do a 3 tone burst, and make the edges an opaque brown.
Seeing what I ended up with, it will be a transparent brown, to a transparent red, to the amber center.
