rant.....

Sooooo I got my bass back from my local guitar shop (Not GC) witch was there for a jack replacement(first time going there). So I asked how much are set ups and he said 50 plus strings. So I said can i buy the strings on online and bring the bass and strings with for a setup. And the guys like why not buy the strings here we can order them for you.The point is he could of said sure bring in the strings and we will set it up.But its like they want more money out of you....idk it's just the way he said it

I don't see the issue. That's a decent price for a setup. Of course he wants to sell strings, and rather than buy from him, you are going on line to save a few bucks (without even asking their price). The idea is to build a relationship with these people, so you become a preferred customer if you ever need a favor.

There's a great amp tech near me, in a guitar store that does good work. I know the guy likes a decent cappuccino. Guess what I try to bring in with me?

Another satisfied TBOT customer.
Bummer how it went down, and it would probably have made more sense to us had we been standing there with you. Tone of voice and demeanor contribute greatly to a conversation and those are hard to relate when typing.

How did the replacement jack work turn out?

No prob - it's part of the Amazon mentality. But remember, these are the guys you trust taking care of your prized possession.

If the guy had a dismissive attitude toward your offering to provide the strings, or about the strings pricing, that’s not very professional. A better way for him to address that would be to offer to knock $5 off, or just say “Sorry, we just can’t meet that price. But either way we’d really like to do your setup for you and we’re sure you’ll be satisfied.”

I'm with the guy in the guitar shop and I see the same thing every day in the auto repair world...... customers want to bring their own parts to save a buck. Usually it's the cheapest part possible and they expect a lifetime warranty out of me on it. When your Amazon alternator fails in a week, I'm not swapping it out for free and there's no way any reasonable person could expect that. Needless to say, I don't install customer provided parts.

If one of the strings you bring the guy is junk out of the box, his time has been wasted. If it was his string, he could swap it out for free.

If they do a setup and you don’t like how it plays, will they make adjustments until you’re happy, at no additional charge?
Learn to do your own setup. Then you can sit at the cool kid’s table. ;)
It’s not that hard and you get it set up the way you want rather than than starting at stock specs and having to have the shop keep adjudting until your happy.
You will be able to also do minor tweaks when needed instead of getting a full setup.
The tools you need will cost less than a $50 setup.
