Does the preamp take that wall wart external power supply on top of it? That would kill my buzz if that is the case.

Yes it does. The rackmount doesn't have anything more goin' on gut-wise than a normal pedal pre. It's probably 9v DC. One more thing to forget, I guess. I've got the same set-up on my early SansAmp rackmount:
