re: Aguilar tonehammer - bass DI/routing question

Hello,

I play in an instrumental band, and have a rather unique setup (and problems to go with it ;) and i'm constantly looking to improve things tonally despite the fact that i'll always have some kind of compromise

I play bass and guitar through the same rig, and more specifically a double neck bass + guitar (one of those steinbergers that came out 5-6 years ago)

I use the same effects on both bass and guitar (we're talking boss slicer + pitch effects) , mid song i switch from guitar to bass and vice versa

The best compromise i've found is using a pod hd500 (for all guitar sims and certain effects) , with an Aguilar Tonehammer in the FX loop of the pod hd500 , sounds better than the bass through the pod sims imo..

so my bass tone is basically the aguilar pedal, going through the FX loop of the pod hd500,

It's the best solution in terms of single footswitching/presets

this all then goes through the various effects (boss slicer/pitch effects/reverb) and then feeds a tube mic preamp , before splitting to a DI and then a power amp , all this goes into a 2x12 and a 1x15 bass cabinet

my question is this, is the signal that comes out of the tonehammer 1/4 output the same as that from the DI output ?

(ie. apart from balanced/unbalanced it's an ideal signal for a DI usage)

and just to make sure i guess, am i just amplifying a DI signal through my rig ?

A) yes: the 1/4" and xlr outputs are the same *unless* you have the xlr switch set to "pre" (before eq), in which case the xlr output will not be changed by the ToneHammer settings.

B) no, the 1/4" signal you're multieffect sees is not technically a "di" signal as "di" signals are balanced (3 conductor). However, assuming your ToneHammer is set to "post", any eq & gain changs you make on the ToneHammer will be present both in the 1/4" out and the xlr output.

thanks a lot =) comprehensive answer

'di' signal was perhaps not the correct term to use, i thought maybe the XLR out might have some extra filtering as opposed to the 1/4 out, that settles it tho, i can sleep now ;)
