Double Bass Re-learning Simandl

Anyone else ever have a hard time with Simandl after learning it 20 years ago and starting over again after about 3-4 years of community college orchestral playing, taking lessons, realizing your bow technique sucks. I had an 8 year break for military service.
But I guess I suck.

Yeah there's a lot threads on this. I just want to talk bass.

Simandl doesn't even sound great when played well! So, a great way to approach it is to just do it each day in a matter of fact way and judge the way the music you love sounds as a result, not the Simandl. Bass methods are not meant to give musical satisfaction, they are meant to make you play better. Simandl does that!

Everything sucks until it ceases to suck.
Report back after it no longer sucks then you can say what fixed it.
I sucked when I started at age 27 and now I’m really good at some things and suck at others at age 62.

I'm doing the same thing. Re-anchoring my positions by starting back at the beginning of Simandl 3rd position. Not having a hard time so much as realizing that I need to be more patient.

If we all considered playing as a journey, not a destination, I am sure we'd see things differently..

Wise words, Andy. Well said ! I have enjoyed and been stimulated by the years of questions you have posed and observations that you have made. These have caused me to think and rethink my ideas about bass playing and bass teaching.

To the OP I would say that Simandl won't help you much with bowing technique, neither the basics or the more sophisticated. We can advise you on material to help but most will suggest that one-on-one lessons with a teacher are your best, most efficient way forward.
