Real bass or bass synth?

Sounds real enough to me, though definitely quite a lot of lows in that tone. I think some of the playing choices like slides are the main thing leading me to say actual bass guitar rather than since - it seems like more work to recreate that with a synth than it is to just play it on a bass.

I also checked out a live video from Farm Aid 2012 and the bass player was playing a very cool Fender Roscoe Beck 5. Surprisingly I heard a couple slaps snuck in there.

Ah cool. I'll definitely have to go check that video. Thanks for checking it out for me! It's a great bass line and I was just wondering how possible it would be to sound that big.
