realist with phantom power?

i'm just trying to get my realist and shiny new dpa 4099 to work together. got myself a headway edb-1 to blend them together with. on closer inspection i find that it will supply phantom power to both realist and dpa at once, but you can't have phantom power just to dpa. will this be a problem for the realist? don't think they're meant to use phantom power are they so will i damage it if i even try it out??
 
No, you won't damage it. It's called 'phantom' power as it only supplies power to those things that need it.

It's called phantom power because it's a DC current that travels along with the signal path on the same wires. It has nothing to do with whether or not you use the DC. You can very well damage something if there is not capacitive or inductive coupling to block it.

I have no idea what a "realist" is, however, so I can't say whether it's going to be an issue or not. Most likely not.

The only "Realist" I know of is a piezo pickup made for the upright bass. Is this what he's talking about...?

I have exactly the same question about using a piezo (PlanetWing pickup for me) and a DPA mic together with EDB-1. I asked the piezo pickup manufacturer about this issue. His answer was that he believed that my pickup would suffer and might defect my pickup as well.

Now I am considering to use Schertler's Yellow Blender instead of EDB-1. But Scertler's blender is more expensive than EDB-1.:crying:

Nonsense. You just have to block the DC for whatever shouldn't see it. Use inductive or capacitive coupling.
 
Use a capacitor if you want to be safe or check with the manufacturer of the equipment. While a transformer will not pass DC its windings will short out the phantom power supply and cause it to emit smoke, noxious odors, and perhaps small (or large) flames -- unless you block the phantom DC with a capacitor before it gets to the transformer. So you will need a capacitor whether you use a transformer or not, no point in buying a transformer unless you need it for other reasons.

Thanks guys. I consider another solution. How about using a separete phantom power supply exclusively to a condencer mic istead of using phantom power via EDB-1. Equipments for phantom supply are found more easily.

What are you running your Headway into, speaker wise? Are you running into a powered speaker [like the QSC] or into an amp/cab configuration?

Normally, the DPA would go direct to the FOH and the Realist signal would be sent into your rig [whatever it may be] for onstage monitoring.
 
IIRC, the phantom power supplied by the Headway is 18V, not the usual 48v we expect when discussing phantom power.

Exactly. Phantom power for mic by EDB-1 is 18 V to the mic channel (Ch 2) and simultaneously 12 V to the Ch 1. But, in fact, DPA 4099 mic does work under such low phantom power.

If I use external phontom supply, I can solve these; get optimal power of 48 V only to mic and avoid unwanted phantom power to Ch 1.
