reaper question

i may be overlooking something very simple here but i just cant figure it out. on my old computer i used reaper all the time to record audio off of youtube for songs that i wanted to learn. i guess somehow i used the stereo mix that the sound card was getting as the input for reaper (internal sound card, no external cables, this is not a dedicated recording computer). now that i have a new computer, with windows 8, i cant get sound into reaper. i have the track armed for record, i have played around with the preferences a bit and have made sure that all my volumes are up on my sound card's mixer, but i still cant get sound into reaper... im not sure that reaper sees my soundcard. when i drag a wave file into reaper i can play it no problem.

You need to run YouTube through an audio interface into your daw. I use reaper as well on my laptop and I cannot use both the laptop sounds and reaper at the same time. When reaper opens it wants to use your interface only for source of audio. Hth

Either try Wasapi in shared mode, or install the free VB audio loopback. Downloading freely streamable music is a grey area, no one should be against it. You're downloading freeware.

so, i know if i take a line out of my headphone jack and then put it back to the line input it will work, but i never had to do that with my old computer...

Definitely check out the Virtual Audio Cable app. It's a bit convoluted at first but once you get out set up, it works wonders. Basically, it creates a virtual audio line in your machine that you can record from (as well as do many other tasks). Here's the link: Virtual Audio Cable Home Page
