I'm mainly a finger-style player and always play my J's with both pickups full on. But I have no problem ROCKIN' my J with Fender 9050L flats!

That said, I do love the sound of a J with flats played with pick. Maybe it's time I learned to do that more often.

Sounds like a waste of a good bass. Stick to the P, Rock-for-brains. You can bury your own efforts behind the grating screeching of a banal lick-repeating, distorted, guitar wretch!

I love my Jazz that has a series mod. Use it all the time live that way for all manner of rock.
Been "rocking" Jazz basses for....30 years. Rounds, flats, pick, fingers--it's one of the classic sounds. I mean, ever hear of JPJ?

I don't think using Jazz basses for rock is particularly controversial. I've been using J-style basses pretty much exclusively for rock/metal for decades, although I tend to go for an active "Super-Jazz" style, with both pickups always full on, roundwounds, and a mix of fingerstyle and pick playing.

Been doing this for years. Precision with flats was too dark for me, but the jazz plus an amp (model) with a little stink on it works great
