Yes the hip support is crazy thin, good idea on using rubber to cushion it. I've spent the evening playing with out the support and my fret arm/wrist aches. (Definitely need to get a better position/technique)There seems to be a piezo pickup in the bridge too. Look at that cable below the bridge that vanishes into the body.
For the support. It is simply too thin. Wind something around it to make it thicker and use things that stick and don't rotate around the support.
For my Clevinger support I used two rubber foam tubes that are supposed to be used for bikes. The inner layer was spirally cut, closely wound around the support and fixed to the support at the ends. The second tube goes over the first one.
