Recognize this wood type ???

Anbody recognize this wood type .I'm getting conflicting answers .i won't say what I think it is .Thanks

I don't know if it the pics, but looks like Jatoba, definitely NOT wenge, Ipe is used for decks here, so I have no point of reference.

Yeah, the cut and dryness is throwing me off a bit...

Possibly Jatobá, but I've seen Angelim as dark as that:

I will say with 100% certainty that this is of the meliaceae family. I believe it to be Sapele.

Flatsawn spanish cedar? You'd know from the smell though.

The grain patterns of Wenge and Sapele are more similar to what I'd seen today, but the boards I was looking at had a huge variety of patterns on them ? The guy bought it about 30 years ago and could'nt remember what it was .African Mahogany was his answer . Thanks again

Those pictures render blurry on my screen. Positive ID is impossible but sapele is as good a guess as any. Could just as easily be utile as there is not much difference. Does not look like khaya or jatoba to me but tough to say from those pics. Would not be surprised if many genii other than khaya (like entandrophragma) were sold as "african mahogany".

Anyone wanting a good guess at an ID should get a clear, close picture of a face, one from farther out, skip planed, also one of the end grain, and provide as much information about smell, weight, and softness as possible.

BTW, how heavy is this board you're looking at? Ipê is pretty heavy and dense. The house I was raised in had doors, windows and ceiling made of Ipê and mind you, the front fence and furniture was all Brazilian Rosewood...

Bahia, Brazil... Homeland of "Jacarandá da Bahia" or "Brazilian Rosewood". House was sold long time ago... Later I found out the fence was completely stolen. Windows and doors are still there...

This is why I said Jatoba, I have almost 30 bd ft of sapele, and it is definitely a similar color, but none of it has that grain structure. The Jatoba does.

sapele is my best guess. is it very hard? tried using sapele in the past for non musical applications and had glue bond issues.

Thanks for this pic Ritchie, while you pic is of a section closer to the pith, and the op's pics are of outer cuts, the grain structure is very different, your pics shows an interlocking grain which is correct, the op's pic shows a directional grain structure and recessed ring structure which is not indicative of Sapele. While I agree it isn't Jatoba, I do not believe it is sapele either.
