Why do you need a cabinet for studio recording? The biggest dub tone I ever made with a passive Fender Jazz was from a Mesa Carbine M9 direct to the board. Headphones, baby!
This is a good point, for sure. All the studio stuff I've done has been direct to board as well. I've gone straight in with a variety of different setups, various DI's (Sansamp BDDI, Tone Hammer, B7k) and through my Shuttle, and it's worked out great every time.
