recommend any drums?

A guitarist and I are looking to make an EP over winter break, and are in need of a drummer. But we have had no luck in our search (had a couple prospects but they fell through). I have always been interested in drumming, and we have decided that we will try the drumming ourselves. Outside of recording I am hoping that drumming will help with my sense of timing, and rhythm for bass/guitar.

Any recommendations? Something cheap, and portable? Anybody have experience using a digital drum set? I live in a small apartment at college, so do not have any room, which is making a digital drum set more appealing. Thanks in advance.

i'd forgo the digital drumset, but that's mainly personal opinion speaking. not to mention they are $$$$$$$$$$$$

my recommendation, piece together a small kit. the essential components are

bass drum (in the 16-20" to save space)
hi-hat
snare

secondary components are

crash cymbal
ride cymbal
mounted tom(s)
floor tom

and in that area, i'd skip the floor tom just because it takes up so much space; get a larger mounted tom instead. it's not always necessary to have a crash cymbal, but i think the ride is pretty important, just for the diversity of sounds you can get out of it.

it totally depends on the type of music you're doing. i've seen jazz guys do great stuff on bass/hi-hat/snare and nothing else. obviously if you're playing metal or something you'll want a bit more.

the only two drums i'm familiar with are DW (drum world) and Yamaha. both quality products, but i believe DW stuff can get expensive. then again, if you want a down-sized kit, you probably won't be able to buy everything as a set. mix and match i guess. most importantly, invest in a quality snare, it will make or break your sound. maybe you could provide a little more info on what in particular you're doing?

Our sound emulates bands like The Libertines(garage rock), but with only 1 guitar, so I'm not convinced that I'll need anything too "heavy." I'll probably stick to basic components for now: the bass drum, hi-hat, crash, and snare. I'd want to keep the total cost around $400-500 if that's possible.

This information is a good start. Hopefully there will be some deals on used equipment at the local shops. Thanks

Who knows, maybe we can find a drummer in the next month.
