Ok, so I have a not very expensive Ibanez GSR-200 P/J bass. I love this bass but something unfortunate happened. I bought a set of D'Addario Chromes XL flat wound strings. I wanted to try the flat wounds and though this would not have been the brand I would have chosen, it's all the flat wound my local store had. I put them on just fine, but as the E string is .100, my intonation was off on it, so I adjust it and as I'm just about perfect SNAP. The string snaps at the nut. Yes this made me angry, but no I did not smash my guitar. I simply put back on my Elixir E strings and tried playing to see how I liked the rest of the flatwounds.
The problem comes in the fact that my string snapping screwed up the electronics. The sound will occasionally get very scratchy and will often completely cut out for a few minutes at a time (glad I'm not gigging). I've already replaced the battery, so I know that's not an issue. I've also tried a different cable and even looking at the connections for the electronics. They all check out fine. Now for the part that makes me thing it's my P pickup: if I completely turn down the P pickup's volume and only use the J, I can't get it to act up.
So I'm thinking changing the pickups and probably all the electronics would be a good move. I would like to stay active. Since you guys probably want sounds I'm after, I would have to say I have always loved the sound of Jeff Pearce's bass in Moist. I have no idea what he used, but it's always just been a great sound. I doubt many of you know who Moist is, but I would encourage you to listen to them on youtube or the like to give an idea of what I want. Unfortunately I can't think of any similar bass sound off the top of my head.
