Recommended Effects for "Bass Only" Band

I was just about to start a similar thread as I am working on a bunch of songs for a band with only drums, bass and vocals.

I don't want to hijack your thread but I'm curious what kind of overdrive or distortion you are using. I've tried my Rat, DS-1, OD-1, Hotcake, Tubescreamer and none of them seem to have a full sound with good attack and definition. I've tried these pedals with lots of different basses and amps too, plus have tried using my Barge blender. Anyone got any ideas?

I'll preach it again! Diesel Dawg into CEB-3 into ODB-3 - all in the loop of an NS-2.

I am thrilled with this solo bass/D&B dynamic (!) hi-gain distortion! I also have had success with the Boss Mega Distortion and PQ-4 parametric in place of the Diesel dawg (in reality though - I need the parametric just to make the MD sound more like the Dawg; it just fits into my Boss pedal case better, and I can still use the parametric for clean playing).

And as I always take opportunity to say: NOTHING beats the Dawg for killer intermodulated subharmonics on double stops!

One of the best things you can do in that type of circumstance is run multiple amps/cabs, and process each channel very differently.{...} That way you fill a lot of air without muddying, canceling, or overstepping yourself too much.

Alternate but not totally disagreeing viewpoint: When you go to multiple rigs you've not removed the potential for cancellation and the like - you've just moved the place where it happens from the electronics realm and into the acoustic one.

In either case, the key is to be using gear that has routing and EQ/voicing differentiation, so that whether it's coming from one source location or several, that it doesn't sound like one mushy long serial chain of effects, which just tends to end up like gumbo that's been in the pot for weeks ; }

But you still have to deal with at least some occasional odditities of summing/cancellation/differentiation either way.

What I have found to be the best for what I am trying to do is an Analogman Modded Ibanez TS-9 Tubescreamer. My other unmodded TS9 is a lot more muddy and doesnt relay the attack and definition that I need as the main instrument. I am also running an ODB-3 as my boosting gain pedal. The rig I run all this through are 2 SVT-CLs through and 810 and a 410.

What would someone recommend as a good Octave pedal?

Anything and everything you want. Don't need permission from mom to do music your own way ; }

+1. I mean, heck.... what do you want to sound like? In this type of band, bass sound = band sound, for the most part. Do you want to sound just heavy and distorted, like Big Business, or do you want to sound funky, psychedelic, or what?

PS have you checked out a band named Clatter?

12-string bass + fuzz + delay

+1, but also +1 to the last poster... Aiming for funky, dubby sounds may need a totally different setup than going for metal which may need a totally different setup than if you wanna be the White Stripes but with Jack playing bass.

That said, I'm a big fan of my setup, which I'm not brave enough to play as a 2-piece (might not go down so well in church, which is where I play mostly) I think would serve well in this sort of setup:

Bass>Digitech BSW>Peavey BAC-2>(highs only)Boss OD3>Rat>Ibanez AD99 delay>Mesa subway blues guitar combo
>(lows only from BAC2)>Eden Nemesis NC115 bass combo.

The BAC2's crossover means I can leave the lows fat, full and unaffected, and the highs with whatever crazy stuff I throw at them. It also means you really do miss out on the frequency interference stuff people are talking about in multi-rig situations.

Steve

PS. I'd seriously recommend the BSW, even though I haven't had it that long. It's got a good octaver, a decent filter and some cool synthy sounds. Even if only one of those things works for you, it's worth it!

You guys are talking about Jarrod from Big Business. Him and Cody (Drummer) formed big business and later on become 1/2 of the Melvins after a tour. Melvins consists of: Jarod, Cody, Dale, and Buzz.

Nope. We're talking about Joe Preston, one of the original bass player for the Melvins...who've had their share of bass players. Anyway, check the Joe Preston link to find out about all his other projects...

I would buy an Akai Headrush II.

You can throw down a bass line, and vamp over it while singing..., and A/B the signal to go to 2 different cabs/amps...

Could be cool, but I have seen this done before. A band in my local area is like this, and it is not as good as I thought it would be. Good luck with it.

Recommendations for pedals: EHX Octave Multiplexer (analog); a Fuzz; and a Whammy.

No they're talking about Joe Preston who was the bass player for the Melvins then he went crazy got better and played in High on Fire went crazy and now he does this:

Is anyone talking about Joe Preston in this thread? I haven't noticed yet and can't scroll up to check it out.

I use distortion in my bass only project. Lots and lots of distortion.
