Record audio on Toshiba ChromeBook 2 2014?

I am trying to record my band using my Toshiba CB2 2014. I have one of these on the way from Amazon (USB 2.0 Virtual 7.1 Channel Audio 3D Sound Card Adapter With Cable line for Notebook) and am hoping it will give me enough gain when connected to our PA mixer board's REC Out jack.

I have Linux installed on my CB. I am guessing that I can use Audacity, Soundcloud or some other web based audio mix/edit service to complete the project.

Anyone have any experience using their CB to record audio?

My advice would be to spend more than $5 on an audio interface. You should get a "real" audio interface or just get a portable field recorder (which you can use the mics or the line in with the record out from your board) and not try to use the computer as a recorder... You can edit the audio files with Audacity later anyway.

Good advice, thank you! I got the cheapest interface I could find just to see if I can make this system work.

right on. since it's so cheap it's not a bad idea to at least try it out. depending on your expectations it might be good enough, and it will also allow you to start messing around with what you want to mess around with and then you can decide if you need to upgrade or not. only being out $5 if it doesn't work or you immediately want to upgrade is not a big loss...

I totally agree with And I, And I totally agree.

If you can get a collection from the ban, you may want to consider a interface like a Presonus Audiobox which comes with a free DAW Studio One 3. It's only $100 US. Once you download the DAW software, and configure your computer with the interface, you'll be ready to plug in 2 mics for your band recording.

You may also need mics & cables, and hedphones if you don't already have them. Or you can buy it all in some package deals. There are a lot of YouTube tutorials on how to set it up and get recording.

If you're going to post it on the Band Camp or Sound Cloud, you should get good quality digital recordings. And a DAW and interface will give you a lot options for enhancing the sound of your recording on your new computer.

I have used a chrome book with a 16gb ssd, using crouton with vanilla ubuntu, and a scarlett solo. I got pretty decent results using ardour, but I was limited by the storage capacity. My wife broke the screen shortly after I got that running so now I'm using her laptop running Ubuntu studio (dual boot) with the scarlett solo, when I fix the screen and upgrade the SSD I'll probably switch back to the CrB using legacy boot with ubuntu studio because it worked really well.

Edit: if you don't have a mic, and monitor headphones, the Scarlett Solo Studio pack is a good deal and works great, and I've added an akg P2 to it so I can mic bass cabs and acoustic basses.

This is GREAT information. I appreciate it. My experiment with the cheap interface worked, but is limited in what I can do with it. I have a good Sennheiser condensor mic and some Koss studio headphones, so I don't need the whole package from Scarlett. I found a Solo on eBay for $60 and it's on the way. It even has phantom power for the mic.
