I have a Rolls PM50se Personal Monitor Amp, into which I can plug my bass guitar and a music source to play along with. The output is stereo TRS headphone out (both ¼” and ⅛”). I want to use the Rolls to send the mixed audio into a video app (Camera app or Filmic Pro) on my iPad. The Rolls has its own power supply.
Normally when I record video, I use a Zoom IQ7 microphone into the Lightning port. Works great, so I know I can record through that port.
I have the Apple Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter that I purchased for my iPhone XR (no 3.5mm headphone out). Using the mic on my headphones, I can record audio into the Camera app in video mode. So the adapter must have TRRS inside the female 3.5mm end; otherwise, the microphone on the headphones wouldn’t work. However, when coming out of the Rolls, the adapter isn’t overriding the built-in mic on the iPad.
I verified that the output from the Rolls is stereo, thus TRS. I’ve seen YouTube videos that show how to take output from a mixer into the iDevice using a separate TRS-TRRS adapter—one really cheap; others like RØDE or iRig, not so much— into the 3.5mm headphone jack, but none using the Lightning adapter. I’m thinking that the Lightning adapter may not know what to do with TRS, and that I may need to buy an additional TRS-TRRS adapter to go between it and the Rolls. It seems to be the only logical conclusion.
