Recording audio from DVDs

I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this but...


I need to record audio from a DVD and record it to a cd and/or slap it on my ipod. What's the "best" way to do this? I've just recently upgraded my PC and am learning ACID and Sonar 7 PE. Will either of these programs help me out? If not, what do you recommend? I have some music dvds that don't have cd equivalent and I would like to listen to them in the car etc.

IF you want to simply record the audio you can go to Radio Shack and get a connector that has a stereo 1/4" plug on one end an stereo 1/8" plug on the other to go from the headphone out on a home theater system into the line input on your soundcard. If you go this route, be sure to set your home theater reciever to stereo and make sure to center the bass and treble tone settings so you can get a flat recording.

I've used Audacity to handle the recording.

Another option is a small digital recorder like the Edirol or Zoom.

That would work but it's a lot of trouble for a lower quality recording.

Most sound cards have an option for recording 'what you hear'. Put it in that mode, hit record, hit Play on the DVD (in your PC). Edit out the silence, set the level, then dump it to CD or iTunes. Simple.

Made a CD out of the tracks on the Fantasia 2000 DVD for my son this way. It sounded great.

I just started doing this, and through my research (asking the computer/music geeks I know including my 13 year old) discovered a program called "DVD Audio Ripper" which does exactly this. It turns DVD soundtrack to mp3 or other audio file.

It comes as a shareware demo which can do a couple of minutes per song, so you can try it. It's pretty cheap to buy online, and activation and use are intuitive and easy. For me anyway....

A Google search will find it quick...

I saw that program while I was looking around, good to know it works well. The open source/free options for doing this work well but they can be pretty cryptic.
