Also check out the M-Audio MicroTrack II. Same price range. I use a Nomad Jubebox 3 with a homebuilt mic preamp. It's a great machine, as it is also functions as an Ipod, but hasn't been made for a few years. Sometimes they come up on Ebay. Not as convenient as the others mentioned because you need a separate mic and pre, but you can record for 3 hours in .wav.

Time to get up to date Ed, something like the Zoom H2 runs circles around any mini disc recorder i.e. built in mics, expandle and convenient transfer storage(SD Card) and non-compressed recording. :D

This hasn't been my experience at all with the H2 and I've used it for literally hundreds of recordings. Where are you placing the unit? Hopefully not right by your amp. :D

I get good clean sound with mostly defaults, but I have it set to record as high quality WAV files rather than MP3. Not sure if that's default. Only issue is the levels come out very low at the default 100 (out of 127) recording level. Problem solved by "normalizing" tracks in audio software. Will try a higher rec level next time. If you're using the same settings, it's possible you have a bad unit.

Dude, I don't even have a CEL much less a computer at home. In addition to A/Bing my minidisc recordings against the same session that Jon recorded on his H (2 or 4, I don't remember) and much preferring the mix and EQ on mine, I also have never had the experience that both Jon and Eliot have had of thinking they are recording (because the little light is on) when they are on standby...

It also has the advantage of being in hand, bought and paid for.

You may have a damaged unit. The defaults right out the box i.e. when you take the batteries out and put them back in, usually produce a very good quality recording.

Dumb question but are you sure you have the zoom set to the proper mic configuration. When I got mine, it was set to the 4 channel mode. I had to set it to the 90 degree mode. I also screwed up and put it backwards the first time I used it, missed the note about the indicator light in the instructions. If it's just you. then you'll want the 90 degree mode.

Full disclosure: I was recording a session with my buddy Jon Easton and I didn't fully hit the PAUSE button to release to start recording, so throughout the session as I kept hitting the button to make a marker between tunes, what I was ACTUALLY doing was recording the breaks between tunes.
