Double Bass Recording Practice Sessions

I’ve come to realize that I need to start recording my practice sessions. My current options for recording are my iPhone, iPad or laptop.

One of my man concerns is how to name and organize the recordings.

I think I would want a descriptive title and probably the date. This could require quite a bit of typing, which can be cumbersome depending on the device. (Perhaps it’s possible to use the microphone feature to name the file instead of typing?)

What do you folks do?

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

My thoughts are that you're eventually going to want to edit the recording or have a way to capture multiple takes of whatever you're working through. Having said that, I may be way off track with your goals here. As an example, if you record with your iPhone, you could use the app "Voice Memos". You can trim the output, and name the .m4a file using whatever naming convention you settle upon (that's always a challenge). However, if you want to try a second take, it would be nice to have software to enable such and keep them together under a "project" name. I'll stop here for a sanity check.

I tend to just the Voice Memos app on my iPhone, as I always have it on me. I type the song or band I’m playing with (or both) and the date as the title for that session. Sometimes I skip adding the date, as the files in Voice Memo are timestamped. iPhone should allow you to title with speech-to-text (microphone button).

A great thing about Voice Memos is I can record on my phone and also record with a mic and an interface on my Macbook with the same app and the recordings are accessible on both my phone and computer through that app. Very simple. It also sounds quite good.
