Recording with iPhone?

we need to clear something up here:

the iphone 3GS has an internal mic that will totally clip with band recordings, while the iphone 4 and up will handle it better.

the blue mikey G2 works nicely with the 3GS; the original mikey also clips with loud band stuff.

mics plugged into the dock connector avoid all the compression and bandwidth filtering that a mic plugged into the headphone jack goes through.

the iphone 4 and ipads won't take the G2 mikey at all, they don't even have analog audio ins on the dock connector anymore.

that little tascam and the new mikey digital only work with the 4's and ipads, because they do their own A/D conversion, sending digital info into the igadget.

i use a mikey G2 into a 3GS, which works great for just this kind of stuff. the best app for it is probably FiRe, which records in hi-fi stereo, has lots of controls and features, and can be loaded right into your itunes.

Hello! Seems as good a thread as any to revive. Here's my situation: I would like to use my iphone 5s to record tunes I've written. I think this requires two things: a decent app, and a decent microphone I can plug into the iphone.

I mean ideally it would be awesome to not have to record songs in one take but I don't know how to do it any other way.

Anyway, the portability of the phone would be awesome. Any recommendations for an app and a mic? I know some people previously mentioned a standalone recording device. I guess that's not unreasonable. But if a decent app and mic would allow me to get a decent sounding recording, well that would be spiffy. Anyone have experience in this area?

These kind of things usually come with some recording software. At the same time there is real full DAWs for iphones, plenty of video's on youtube, search for cubase or aura.

Or you can buy interfaces design specifically for IOS. They usually work on Macs also.

This is just one company, there are many many more available if you look around.
iPhone also supports USB interfaces with the USB camera kit.

And if you already have a small mixer keep in mind the iPhone has a 16bit, 44.1k interface built in. This is more than adequate for some serious recording. Plug the mixer into the iphone and use the mixer's pre-amps.
