Reddit Thread

nice informative subject line... not ;)

about the ads... has anything changed recently? I see ads, but they don't seem too obtrusive, or at least any more obtrusive than they've been for some time.
Ditto. Also the redditer mentions sales going poorly but....That's certainly not why I'm here. I sell on other sites. I use TB for advice and conversation, which is well worth my subscription.

I don’t find the ads here all that intrusive. I did have a short time where video ads would start automatically, but that issue has been resolved.
If redditors don’t like it here, stay on reddit. People get worked up over the dumbest stuff.

Interesting that the perception is that Talkbass is "dying". I did a quick AI search (yes i know it can be hit and miss) and supposedly traffic to Talkbass today is about half of what it was around 2016 to 2019. I can definitely see that impacting sales in the classifieds, for instance.

I pay 0 attention to any ads anywhere, just because that’s the way I am wired. If I’m watching TV and on comes a commercial, my mind goes into a different state of being, not even knowing or remembering what I’ve been inundated with.

Same here with ads.
That, and the mute button is a wonderful thing, too.

Eh, I just use a combination of AdBlock and Ghostery. No issues with ads at all, anywhere really. Plus, ads are becoming more intrusive most anywhere you go online these days. And oftentimes there's no choice but to "sell out" in order to pay the rent on your piece of Internet real-estate.

All that said, there are certain websites that I've whitelisted on my blockers because they're great places run by great people whom I want to support.

As for the community itself... communities change over time. TalkBass is far different than it was 20ish years ago when I first joined. I would presume younger bassists are using different platforms to form bassist communities, like Discord and all. Forums in this kind of format aren't as popular as they once were.

It's not lost on me that TalkBass's demographic skews a little older. The irony is not lost on me that I'm 48, yet I sometimes see myself proferring a "younger" perspective/point-of-view compared to others in some threads/discussions.

There is still plenty of value on TalkBass. It just takes a little effort to get past all of us old-heads repeatedly reminiscing about the "good ol' days" to find that gold.

This is a fair point. However, YT goes a little overboard at times. 2 ads before a 3 minute music video is...excessive.

They got me when they started putting ads in the middle of hour long DJ sets. Just as a banger was coming in they’d stop for an ad. Not great practices I’ll admit, but it worked.

Best $25 a month or whatever it is I spend. Esp with YouTube music included.

haha same. We are so inundated with irrelevant crap everywhere, at this point it reminds me of the saying "If everything is urgent, nothing is urgent"... I don't even pay attention

Amazing to me how many people think things should be free for them.

People complaining about ads on youtube is my favorite. Ok, here have this immensely massive repository of well produced enjoyable video content for free then.
Fun fact - YouTube originially started as an idea for a dating site. It failed, so the originial owners decided to make it a site where the general public could easly upload videos. Evil corp bought it in 2006
