reducing rig size

Hello,

I have a query which involves the use of a hypothetical situation. You use a rig which has a 810 cabinet and a 412 cabinet, but for logistical reasons you need to cut down the size of the rig cabinets by half. My question is, would you cut the rig down to an 810 or use a 212 with a 410 stacked on top or some other combination, and would a 410/212 rig have a similar sound to an 810/412 except with half the bulk involved.

Thanks.

Depends. I can use either one of those cabs and be happy. But my "small" rig is an Aguilar DB115 and DB112 with an AG500 head. That's the money.

I don't know about 410/212, because I've never run that.

I had a GS112 and it was cool. Deep, but not crazy punchy. DB is WAY more my style. MIDRANGE PLEASE!!!

As an aside, a little mantra for the day: BOLD AND UGLY MIDS DON'T USUALLY SOUND BOLD AND UGLY IN CONTEXT! Don't be afraid of going just a shade too far with the midrange, people. Just a kind of "word of the day".

Hmm....that's a good idea. I'm gonna start posting some kind of daily "from the field" anecdote, lesson I've learned, lesson I've failed to learn, etc.

Ok, I'm about to take the plunge, but I'm wondering if I should get the DB115 and use it as a standalone with my AG500 (knowing that I can always throw a 210 or something in there if I really ever need it) or ante up for the DB212 4ohm.

any thoughts?

I think my real question is, will the DB115 at 8 ohms be "enough" or am I going to miss the fullness of multiple speakers. The 500 puts out way more volume than I ever need at 4ohms through the 2 12" speakers, but I notice that there's a depth to the sound that seems to be lacking when I run just 1 cab. Anyone else experience this? Also will the 212 sound like 2 112s or significantly different?

Just rec'd my classic black DB 112..LOVE LOVE LOVE it..a little heavy for a 112 but sounds great with my TF and Mesa WA heads...great punch and easy to dial in a variety..might need to trade my current 410 for a bigger db cab..

Thanks for the recs JMJ

Opinions about db112 and DB750/AG500 with double bass? I already have DB750 and will get me one of those AG500, for sure. I have tested them with electric and will test with double bass but just curious if somebody has found out something special.

you will more than likely need a separate eq if you intend to double, but it should work great. this isn't based on experience with aggie stuff as much as it's based on using a rig that people tell me won't work with upright yet works wonderfully. you can use any amp for anything ;)

Yeah. I thought that db112 would be great for double bass, since I find 1x12 speakers very good with it. Plus, as JMJ said, db is more midrangey than GS112, which suits better for the doghouse.

i'm kind of surprised that I don't see you use and/or talk about Ashdown heads more. i've used mine for years and don't need much else except when i really hear the need for an ampeg tube character. they are totally voiced towards the low-mid/mid and really shapable in that area, too.

The Ashdown stuff is good! I just like the Aguilar character for my basses a lot. The Ashdown guys were down to sign me up about 3-4 years ago, and we had meetings, but at that time I might have been swayed by some bad PR about quality issues, and thought the heads were kind of gimmicky, but again: I thought they sounded cool, though the 4x10 I tried was a little too boomy.

Yes, that's me from Sunday. :) Didn't realize someone snapped me. I was trying a pair of those cabs, and they literally melted my face off. I quite literally don't have a face anymore, the above image was photoshopped with a different face. ;))) Anyway, no: they sound astounding. Bigger lows than DB112, but maybe almost the same mid. WARM! (was a little surprised at this). I have to get a pair.
