+1 on Steel Pulse, killer band. David Hinds is most excellent.

For modern reggae, catch a JBB show. Saw them recently at a festival and the bass player kicks ass. He was playing through a couple of 18" cabs with the amp turned up to "liquefy bowels"- it was blissful.

I'm mostly an early roots guy so I would suggest:

Abyssinians-Satta Massagana (The best roots album of all time IMO, check out Y Mas Gan, The Good Lord, Reason Time,There is no End, but really every tune on there is incredible)
Aswad
Burning Spear-Hail H.I.M., and pretty much anything else he has done
Israel Vibration-Why you so Craven,Jah Jah Rock,Consular Man
Midnite-'Unpolished' is my favorite album of theirs
Misty in Roots-Cover up, True Rasta
Twinkle Brothers-Since I Threw the Comb Away
