Rehearsal Space - where to find it

Is it a problem for you and your band to rehearse in the city(Chicago)?

2 of our members live out of state, so we have a very limited amount of time to rehearse when they get into town. The best situation would be something close to O'Hare so when they fly into town there is not time spent to travel to a rehearsal site. The remaining members are suburban residents.

Yes, it is an odd mix of members, but it is what we have right now.

Most bands I've been in practiced in someone's house, but one project used my church. If you think about it, churches are just about ideal; big spaces, free-standing buildings, and they sit empty much of the week. Plus many could use a little extra cash. Of course, you'd have to mind any policies on drugs or alcohol they have, and in general it depends on your band - some churches wouldn't be too thrilled about providing space to a death metal band or whatever, and some wouldn't to any secular band at all. But a lot of them would be perfectly happy to work with a blues or jazz or classic rock band or whatever.

You really need to watch out for building codes and zoning when you are talking about self storage places, because at least here in the Boston area, when you put people inside a structure for an extended amount of time, it has to meet very strict codes for safety and that's why it is prohibited in New England. Unfortunately, when it says storage, that's exactly what it means, and the storage places will not meet these codes for fire evacuation, sprinkler systems, emergency lighting, and things like that. I rented a unit in a strip light industrial/warehouse once. I had a big, open, 2-story space in back, with a roll-up door big enough to drive a truck into. I don't remember the dimensions, but we could set up the whole stage kit even with the truck inside. Up front was an office, washroom, & kitchenette/break room. Pretty sweet setup! I don't recall the rate, but it was pretty reasonable at the time.
