Repairing surface-mount components

Nitpicking time: they're vias, not test points! They might be too narrow for a component lead, especially a 1N400X diode lead.

The 4148 has a measly 200mA If, whereas 1N400X series is more like 1A (ignore the techy term, just note the significant difference). I have a feeling they do this on purpose so the diode will sacrifice itself during a reverse polarity incident. A 1N400X will get it working, but it might also kinda defeat the purpose of the "sacrificial" diode idea.

Vias- I understand now. For the price, I personally would be tempted to order 25 of em and just use the mfr's replacement spec. That way if something bad happens again, you don't have to go replacing an IC or something fun like that.

Have a few extra on hand as "fuses" Too bad shipping won't be a postage stamp!

Both of these ideas are quite sound. theres a reason why it comes with a 4148.

And, now the REAL fun begins...replacing it.
