Double Bass Repairs in Toronto

Has anyone had their bass worked on at The Sound Post in Toronto? How was your satisfaction level?

Hey, although I've never had a direct experience with them if you want a top notch job you should try out the Twelfth Fret, they are supposed to be mighty good repairmen. As for the Sound Post it looks like a highly respectable place.

K, stay away from the Sound Post, I mean it. They really have no idea how to work on a double bass. They sell mainly violins/violas and cellos and the very few basses they have are in extremely poor condition with makeshift parts that they make on site.

Go to George Heinl's, they specialize in bass repairs and they are really incredible luthiers and repairman. Very friendly guys with very good prices. They charge 88 dollars per hour of work and they do an excellent job. The store is used by 90 percent of professional and student bassists in Toronto.

The 12th fret is only for guitars and bass guitars. They do beautiful work in that category.

+1 with Calvin the only time I went to the soundpost I needed a quick soundpost adjustment, I'm used to Heinl being able to go into the repair area and see what is being done with my bass asking benign questions etc to learn. At the soundpost I gave them my bass and wasn't able to see what was being done, at Heinl the soundpost adjustment they work through it with me making sure everything is just right, soundpost take it or leave it type of attitude, I'm not sure if it is because it was my first time there and not sure if they give better treatment to people who frequent more often. Troy and Steve at Heinl do wonderful work on my basses and couldn't be happier, it may be a bit more expensive than other luthiers but well worth it.

Ludi Pollak does good work at a very reasonable rate, and he's a bassist. Very friendly guy too; he used to do my repairs in TO and helped me out with some emergency work on a loaner bass last time I was out there, on a Sunday evening yet. He's in the phone book.

The Sound Post is a great store (they still have the 'string lab'?) but they wouldn't be my first choice for bass repair.
