I am wondering how expensive it would be to repace a nut on a 1970's Harmony bass guitar? My friend will sell it to me for around $90, but I don't want to buy it if its gonna cost a ton of money to put a new nut on it. Its a 4 string bass.

I guess it depends on which material you want your nut to be made of.. should not be expensive, though. I just ordered a bone-nut for a spanish guitar, price 40 dkr~7$. Plastic is much cheaper...
Depends on how particular you are about your setup, but from 5 bucks to probably 50-60 bucks. You can get out on ebay or parts shops, and find a premade plastic nut, glue it in and be done. Or take it to a tech, and get a quality custom one cut -- that should cost you 60 bucks or so, depending on the rates charged in your area. Slap a premade one on a 90 buck bass -- you should be fine.
