Replacing pickups on an OLP MM22

Hi,

I have an OLP MM22 bass with the stock pair of passive Musicman pickups, 5 way switch, volume/bass/mid.high controls (4 controls) and preamp.

Can I replace this with a pair of EMG MMCS pickups and how would I wire the new setup?
A local shop has the pickups in stock but is unsure if a pair would work. Fitting a single pickup seems straightforward.

I'd like to retain the single 9v battery. Finding space for 2 batteries may be difficult.

Thanks

you can't replace the passives for EMGs without removing your old preamp.. i would contact EMG and find out what harness, or bass preamp modules would work best in your bass..

you also might want to look at Nordstrand.. for both pickups and a preamp..

You cannot use the olp pre and EMGs together. I would suggest the GFS MM Alnico V. http://store.guitarfetish.com/gfsmmproplal.html They are the same specs as original 70s Musicman ans will sound great in the olp mm22 as opposed to the stock ceramic versions

Ok so if i take out my basse's pre amp how do I wire the two EMG's together? All the wiring diagrams i have found have been for a single pickup.

honestly, if you don't know how to wire it in, take it to a reputable tech in your area if you are dead set on EMGs..

otherwise..

look at Nordstrand passive pickups, using your existing preamp.. or, any passive pickup..

or think about using the EMG-HZ MMHZ..

Thanks for your help guys. I have decided to go with 2 Seymour duncan music man replacements and to replace the OLP pre amp with a Seymour duncan one. This should give me a pretty awesome stingray like tone which is what i want.

Save your money and get the GFS pickups.... I have the Duncans MM pickups and and pre-amp AND the GFS...

GFS mm alnico v pickups and S duncan pre-amp you will need a blend kniob.

I would get them but i live in australia and no shops sell that brand and i would rather get them local incase something goes wrong. Also whats a blend knob?

you can order the GFS pickups directly from www.guitarfetish.com.. i don't know what shipping/VAT etc would be on them.. but if you can get the Duncans local, do that.. GFS pickups are very good import pickups, but Duncans are Duncans.. ;)

a blend knob is a center detented pot that when you turn it one way, it's the neck pickup and the other way would be the bridge pickup.. it's like a fader knob on a radio.. ;) you don't specifically need a blend knob, you can use your 5 way that you have now.. but, a blend knob is *very* useful to get those in-between tones that you cannot get with a switch.. again, it's very useful.. but not strictly needed..

I just put a GFS pickup in my OLP. I removed one volume pot and replaced it with a Series/Parallel switch. I used it on a gig Friday night and it really sounded good, much better than the stock pickup. Some friends in another band showed up and played a couple of songs, so I got a chance to hear it from in front. I really liked it, and so did the other bass player. A good pickup for a good price.

That looks awesome dude, i can't wait to get mine. I have been waiting weeks for my 2 Seymour duncan pickups and the pre amp to come from the States. I'll put up some sound samples if anyone is interested in the difference.
