Replacing PUs in Fender P Bass with MFDs?

I have a Fender/Warmoth P bass build with passive EMGs. It sounds ok but there is some hum and I want to try something different.

I really like the punch of the MFDs in my G&L SB2 and I am thinking about swapping out the EMGs in my P bass with MFDs. I would love to hear the pros/cons from anyone who has done this.

I put MFD’s into one of my jalopy basses and it sounded great. One thing I had to do was modify a set of pickup covers to accommodate the MFD pole pieces.

regarding active EMGs, I have another p bass with active EMGs (which I like). Like most people on this forum I have a few too many basses.

MFD P pickups are some of the best P pickups around, and a great deal directly from the G&L store. No need to modify any covers to fit, as they come with covers and are the same size as typical P pickups

The MFD split-coil is fantastic IMO, and my SB-2 had been a main player since 2007. But do you want two basses with essentially identical split-coil tone? If so, great, but otherwise you could get something like a Lindy Fralin or Nordstrand for a more vintage vibe, while still having lots of punch.

For awhile I had a Fender P with Lindy Fralin alongside my SB-2, and I liked having the choice. I would have kept the Fender for tone, but the G&L had vastly superior playability (for me), so I sold it.

I have a friend on this forum who put an MFD pickup in his L-100 with great results.

I recently have been through a bit of a gambit on P pickups, and landed on the mfd for my Squier MIK Bullet. They’re loud pickups, with a lot of clarity and presence. Very modern sounding. A perfect foil to my classic vibe 60s. And after shielding the bass, they’re dead quiet unless you touch the pickup poles without touching the strings. For the price, they’re a great option for a more modern take on a p sound.
