Replacing Speakers?

So I think I have 2 blown speakers. One is a 12" in my SWR combo, and one is a 15" in my Carvin. What is the best route to replacing these? What kind of new speaks should I get, and where should I get them from?

"ain't nothin' but a party everybody get loose!!!"

The speaker blew in my ashdown 115 cab, I replaced it today with a Celestion 15" 400w driver. It was only £70, its paper not neodymium though.

It's easy to replace them, just solder the wires in.

Does anyone know how tight the screws holding the speaker in should be?

Yes, it's easy to drop in another speaker. As for the cabinet design, there's a good chance you threw that out the window.

It may sound good. May sound bad. May even damage the speaker.

+1. You don't replace the tires on your car with the only specification being diameter, and the same applies to drivers. If it was that simple there would only be a few driver models available, not hundreds.

Call Carvin and order a replacement for the Carvin cabinet and SWR for the twelve. It's alway best to replace a blown speaker with an Identical one so that it will work properly in the cabinet you own.

Scott, Celestion speakers are not easy to find over here in the Americas. They also don't publish their TS specs that much unlike say Eminence so therefore are not that popular to the DIY crowd.

Celestion has recently gotten the message and now publishes specs on most models. But supplies are very sparce even in the UK as they've moved production to China and the pipeline seems to be clogged. Some of their products, such as the BL series, have decent specs. The BN series OTOH are quite unimpressive.

Unless the basket or magnet is trashed, why wouldn't you spend way less money and have it re-coned:confused: Eden for example will sell you a Eden kit to re-cone one of their speakers.

If the genuine re-cone kits are available I agree whoheartedly. If not then the re-cone using generic parts will probably be totally different from the original and once more you have a crapshoot!
