After playing my bass, I noticed a grayish residue on my fingerboard under the strings. Is it something to do with evah pirazzis or synthetic strings in general? I never noticed this with spiros.

I have played Evahs for about two years now and haven't noticed any kind of residue.

No, it's not rosin. It's like a metallic color and it's under the strings for most the of length of the fingerboard. However, I don't think it's occurring anymore.. hmm.

That's metal from the windings. It seems to be a new string thing, then it stops. Not a problem.
Whew! I put new flatwounds on yesterday and experienced the same thing. Glad to hear I'm not to worry. Thanks.

I like to clean the strings before installation (new or used) with methyl hydrate.
It removes the residue from the manufacturing process from the new ones and the finger oils and dirt from the used ones!

I just wipe them a few times with a rag.
If they feel a bit rough, I also use #0000 steel wool and wipe them again.
