Recently I purchased a fender MIM J bass from GC, I must say I was very dissatisfied with the overall quality of the bass, the bridge, and so forth (even though when I was trying it out at gc it sounded good, but then again I could barely hear myself playing over some g****rds playing). So I was wondering how grinds (and milleniums) perform, I've been gassing for one badly lately and have heard that some are hit and miss. I was thinking maybe buying the 5 model because I would still have money left over to mod it a little. Also how easy are bass returns at GC? There are a few minor scratches on the pickguard which are only notice able if you look at them at a certain angle under bright halogen light.

My Grind 4 string is my favorite bass. I had the same problem. Bought a MIM Jazz, and resorted back to my Peavey. I thinkthe Jazz might go in for trade on a new rig. If you can afford it, buy the higher end models of PEavey, but Im a HUGE supporter.
I've played a few grinds, none of them really appealed to me. A guitarist I jam with has a 4 stringer and its not bad at all, and for the price I would compare it to my lower end Ibanez 305, but the Ibanez edges it out in overall sound and playability. The MIM jazzes to me are more hit and miss, sometimes I play one that sounds great and other times it seems like they're a trainwreck with 4 strings!
Used Peavey is a great option. Ifnot i'd recommend a millennium bxp over a Grind, also check out the Cirrus bxp.
did you pay extra for the warranty at gc? Most likely they wont take it back and give you full price. Gc will probably take it as a trade in and give you like 250 to 300$ store credit. If you bought the warranty get it repaired and re sell it to someone else. That will be how you can get most of your money back. I have no experience with peavey except for the t40 which was amazing. A used music store had one and I had to pick it up. I wish I had the money at the time that thing would have gone home with me if I did.
