You can fix the nut and get a better string retainer but the location of those keys are off.

Yeah, right. Return a bass over a 1 mm discrepancy. And I'll wager that every replacement bass you are sent will have the same problem.

My Squier CV’s don’t nor does my Modulus (price and quality point extremes for dramatics lol). But I hear you

Those slots are wrong. All this talk about tuner location and the retainer are immaterial. That isn't the problem.

If this was a bass I liked in all other respects, I'd just get a new nut and call it a day. It will be less of a hassle than dealing with Fender, packing and sending the bass back and waiting for a new one, which may have its own issues.

This, it is probably much less effort to just fix it with a new nut

I just received a brand new Player II Precision. I like it except that the distance between the A & the D strings is smaller (9 mm) than that between the E & the A strings or that between the D & the G strings (both 10 mm). Of course, it doesn't affect the tone and the playability. But whenever I look at the bass, I focus on the non-uniformity of the distances, which to me is an eye sore. I know I won't ignore it. If I am to keep the bass, I'll have to replace the nut. Would you keep it or return it?

I would return it and buy a Sire P5R instead.

It wouldn't bother me...until I noticed it for the first time. Then, every time I look at it, that's all I'd see.
